Dresden is the capital of Saxony and a major cultural centre: the Zwinger, Frauenkirche, the Residence and the Old Masters Gallery with Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. From Pension Festung in Petrovice it is typically about 35–45 minutes by motorway towards the border — a great day trip from the Ore Mountains.
The city lies on the Elbe; the Brühl Terrace is often called the “balcony of Europe”. Also worth seeing are the Semper Opera, museums in the Albertinum and the Neustadt quarter with cafés and alternative culture.
Why Dresden from our pension
- World-class art and architecture — baroque and modern side by side.
- Manageable distance — culture and shopping without changing hotel every night.
- Combine with nature — rocks and Elbe canyon by day, city in the evening or the next day.
Practical tips
City centre parking is limited; Park & Ride or trams from the outskirts work well. Museums often need timed tickets in peak season — book ahead. From Petrovice you cross the border — carry documents and check vignette rules for your route in Germany.
